The temporary agency sent me to a place to interview on Friday. A four hour process including a computer application, interview with human resource specialist, interview with a team of workers, interview with a supervisor, a drug test, releases for a criminal background check and credit check. A job with no benefits and a little more than minimum wage.

We talk about what they look for in the credit check. No more than $2000 in collections. People who are disqualified from this position usually are those who were working $6 an hour jobs without health insurance.

They have a medical emergency that they can't pay for and chip away at the debt week by week.

Around here, any position that pays $2 to $5 or more than minimum wage that you can get with an high school education requires a credit and background check. Think lead cashier, bank teller, telephone representative, etc. If they are trying to work with health problems, they can't work jobs that also pay well like truck driving, factory floor positions, and construction.

Some of these jobs have health insurance, some don't. There is this unspoken barring of folks from positions with health insurance because they didn't have health insurance before. Some, even though required by law, are never told why.
